The EdWords - just outstanding

Man, I wish he was still running. If I buy the jetski, will he get back in?

Patriotism

Why doesn't John McCain prove his patriotism with a 5 cent flag pin on his lapel?

And why aren't we asking HIM that question?

That's my girl

Me: "So, what did you do today, sweetheart?"

Ella: "I went to the park. I played with Charlotte."

Me: "Really? What did you do?"

Ella: "We went to the beach, and there were crocodiles."

Me: "Oh, no! Did you run away?"

Ella: "No. I beat them up."

Dellinger's Debate Performance Solidifies his Position

crossposted at BlueNC

Last night's Lt. Gubernatorial forum was instructive, and showed again why Hampton Dellinger is such a strong choice for Democrats in this race. I have selected some very short excerpts of the forum last night where I thought Hamp was particularly strong.

The entire forum is supposed to be online soon at UNC-TV. I'll link to that when it is up. These short clips are made to generate discussion and to educate voters. Please check out Hampton's own TV Ad and Radio Ad at http://www.hd08.com and sign up to support the campaign.

Here are the clips:

Hampton on the Economy and Education

Hampton's focus all year has been on making North Carolina number one in things other than a place to do business. The strength of our economy and our growth is dependent on the quality of life here in North Carolina, and Hampton does a good job here of tying it all together, including the importance of supporting our education system, even in tough economic times.

Hampton Dellinger on the importance of Voter Owned elections

Here, Hampton reemphasizes one of his foremost progressive positions - that money should not control politics. He favors extension of the Voter Owned elections act to cover all state offices. At the same time, he recognizes that other reforms are necessary, and calls for prohibiting fundraising or donations from government contractors and appointees.

Mr. Besse and Sen. Dalton both took shots at Hampton's fundraising, but both did it in a sidelong, indirect manner that only registered for those of us who have read campaign finance reports. And neither can contend that the Dellinger campaign has been anything but above-board in its fundraising. Above-board and darn effective I might add. Until the day when we don't need to fundraise to win elections, we need to make sure our candidates can keep up on that score.

Hampton on Health Care and Independent Critiques of Senator Dalton's Record

Hampton has taken some heat for pointing out distinctions between rhetoric and records and between his record and those of his opponents. Last week, an independent expert echoed his critiques of Sen. Dalton's record on health care funding in the budget process. Hampton very tactfully and directly addressed that issue, and then tied it in nicely to what he believes should be North Carolina's health care policy.

Hampton's Closing Statement

I've often talked about Hampton's strengths as a candidate including his ability to speak directly to voters on television. I think this clip shows those strengths. To be fair, all four candidates had moments where they stumbled a bit last night, and Hampton trips over his tongue once here - happens to the best of us, and I included it to show that I am not trying to fawn all over him here. That's not to say, though, that his real talents don't shine through when he's looking right into your living room. Our best standard bearers in the Democratic Party have shown that ability - and I think, personally, that Hampton has it in spades.

Here, Hampton sums up his reasons for running in what has become a regular part of his stump speech. Also, new this time, is the reference to the impressive string of endorsements he has garnered over the last several weeks.

The Dellinger bandwagon is rolling. Come jump on.

850 The Buzz poses a crucial question

In honor of the return of The Office and 30 Rock, Joe Ovies over on 850 The Buzz has asked a question which should cause any redblooded American male a great deal of soul-searching and, in a fair world, an even greater deal of comparing and contrasting:

Tina Fey or Jenna Fischer?

Start shaking your head now

... because that's what you'll be doing when you finish reading this article from the News & Observer. The East Wake High School marksmanship team has been denied permission to participate in an off-campus, FFA and State sanctioned riflery competition, because the principal discovered, seven months after the kids started training, that riflery competitions require rifles and ammunition.

This competition, mind you, is supervised by adults trained in firearm safety and is sanctioned by the State Department of Environment and Natural Resources. It does not take place on school property. No guns ever come on school property, and East Wake was, until recently, a rural area where kids actually still hunted and where, presumably from the mere existence of the club, students still have an interest in the activity.

School administrators have a very difficult job. Especially when they refuse to use common sense.

Number Nine

Top ten ranking. I'll take it. Though I am not sure how Xavier got in at number 8.

Objective fact

I'm having loads of fun over at the blog for Sports Radio 850 the Buzz baIting [thanks to the perfectly named smallandpettypat for pointing out the typo - jerk] North Carolina fans with what seems to me to be a logically infallible point:

by the end of the season, Davidson College was playing the best basketball of any team in North Carolina.

Short of Davidson and UNC meeting in the Final Four, what proof do you need of that position other than results against a common opponent at the top of its game for the highest stakes? Kansas beat Davidson by 2. 6 days later, they annihilated UNC.

Let me put this as I put it on 850theblog:

Only Kansas beat us in 2008, and they only beat us by two.

Kansas humiliated Carolina. They took your lunch money, threw you in the puddle and made you eat dirt. Then they kissed your girlfriend, right in front of you, and she laughed at you as she walked off with them. Worse yet, they did that after Davidson showed your coach EXACTLY how to play against Kansas.

At the end of the season, nobody in North Carolina was playing better basketball than Davidson. The only reason Carolina got one more game is because their path to San Antonio was a downhill stroll on a paved sidewalk lined with lemonade stands.

Davidson, by comparison, climbed Mt. Everest, going through a 7 seed, a 2 seed and a 3 seed before falling just short at the buzzer to the 1 seed that just handed Roy his butt.

I stand by that argument. I dare you to prove me wrong. And you cannot argue that I am wrong because Davidson lost early in the season to UNC (neutral), Duke (neutral) and at Charlotte. Play all those games this week, and I say we win all of them.

Put it this way: if Jason Richards' shot had gone in (a predicate I know I will be saying with wistful regret for the rest of my life) - if Jason Richards' shot had gone in against Kansas, then tonight's game would have still featured Memphis against the champion of the Midwest Regional.

ON EDIT - Despite the rantings of smallandpettypat and others like him, who purchase their UNC gear from WalMart and call the team "we" while it is winning and "they" when it loses, my point stands.

I did not say we were the more storied basketball program (though I'd rather do what we have done with integrity over the last 100 years than to have ever admitted Makhtar Ndiaye). I did not say we were the better team in November (though our star had one working arm in that game). I did not say we were the better team in December (when we dropped an inexcusable game to NCSU). What I wrote, and what I think is correct, is that we were playing the best basketball of any team in the state by the end of the season. If you can look at that flawless Wisconsin game and come to any other conclusion, you're just a misguided fan of a program that suffered its most humiliating loss in its entire history only to have its coach show up in the team colors of the team that humiliated you. If that happened to me, I'd be desperate to change the subject, too.

The only reason you had one more game in the tourney than we did is that we played Kansas before you did. You might have noticed they struggled to put us away. The only thing they struggled with against UNC was how to shoot while laughing.

Good day, sir.
